Previous FBI director James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and hindering a congressional proceeding.

His lawyer submitted the response acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer declared he would seek to have the legal matter terminated for various causes including that his defendant, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was charged just days after Donald Trump pressured his top legal official to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative informed the court they intended to present various motions to terminate the case before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was spiteful and that a US attorney was wrongfully designated to take over the legal matter.

James Comey's case was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into a different opponent - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

The former director came across in positive mood as he entered the courtroom on Wednesday, conversing with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was joined by his spouse, his wife and child Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration recently fired.

After listening to the court state his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was asked if he comprehended the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he informed the judge.

Historical Information

James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was fired about several months into Trump's initial presidency as president. At the moment, Mr Comey was directing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the election effort.

During his tenure, the director caused a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was examining political contender Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against the candidate were not filed, resulting in disapproval from Republicans as well.

Present Charges

The federal government claim James Comey lied to Congress during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the legislative body by saying he had not approved an individual at the FBI to disclose to journalistic entities information about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also charge James Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and impede" the panel by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

In a video James Comey published to his Instagram after he was indicted, he stated he was innocent and charged Donald Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have understood for years that there are ramifications to challenging Donald Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he added. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The charges against James Comey surfaced after Donald Trump posted on social media insisting on his attorney general, Pam Bondi, prosecute James Comey and additional individuals.
