The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has announced he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state right away.

He was scheduled to be a candidate among three competing for the role of Irish president, together with Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys.

Nonetheless, late Sunday he announced through a declaration that he "erred which did not align with his character and his personal standards."

"Taking all these considerations on board, I have decided to withdraw from the presidential election contest right away and return to the arms of my family," he stated in his announcement.

Further updates expected.
