India Overcome Bug Invasion to Sail to Chilly Win Over Pakistani Rivals in Women's World Cup

Pace bowler Goud and spin specialist Deepti Sharma took three scalps apiece as India defeated Pakistan by a substantial margin in their Women’s World Cup match, starting like recent ones between the countries men’s teams without a handshake from the skippers and then featured a controversial run-out of a Pakistani opening batter.

India’s captain, Kaur, declined to shake hands with Pakistan’s Fatima Sana during the toss and the teams walked off without greeting each other after the match amid political tensions between the two south Asian neighbours.

The captains at the men’s Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates also did not shake hands at games between the two rivals. Indian authorities have alleged Pakistan of having involvement in attacks on tourists that claimed many lives.

Game Overview

India lost the toss, India were all out for 247 in 50 overs. The opening pair, Pratika Rawal and star player Smriti Mandhana, put on 48 runs for the first wicket before Sana had her lbw for a 23 off 32. She made 31 before she was bowled by the left-arm spinner Iqbal. Kaur scored 19 runs before edging behind off Diana Baig.

Deol was the top scorer for the team with 46 runs and Richa Ghosh made a quick-fire 35* to boost their team to a respectable score.

Jemimah Rodrigues (32), Sharma (25) and Rana (20) all made valuable contributions, while Diana took 4/69 for the opposition and the duo had two wickets apiece. Play was halted for a quarter-hour because bugs were troubling the cricketers.

Pakistan’s Innings

The Pakistani team were dismissed for 159 in 43 overs. The only half-century of the game in the venue came from Amin, who made 81.

The opening wicket was lost in a confusing manner when the opening batter Muneeba Ali was adjudged run out. She had placed her bat after returning to her crease, having moved forward to play a shot. The bat was then lifted momentarily when an India throw hit the stumps. Sana protested to the official that the batter was not running but the ruling was upheld.

Her 106-ball innings included a maximum and nine boundaries. Goud took three wickets for 20 runs and the spinner returned 3/45.
